Myofascial
Release

Myofascial release therapy eliminates pain, tension, and stiffness caused by muscles or other connective tissues that are restricted by tight, or “bound up,” fascia. Fascia is densely woven connective tissue, covering and penetrating every muscle, bone, nerve, artery, vein, and internal organs including the heart, lungs, brain and spinal cord. The fascial system is one continuous structure that exists from head to toe without interruption, therefore the effects of a restriction can affect the entire alignment of the body. In other words, when one area is being pulled it will affect the entire neighboring area and beyond which acts as a domino effect for tightness, discomfort and pain. Also, damaged fascial tissue can contribute to pain at “trigger points” that restrict blood flow to nearby areas, causing the damage to spread further.

Myofascial restrictions often occur from patterns of movement when a muscle has been contracted repetitively. This happens in jobs that require repetitive motion or when stress-related muscle tension is present. Trauma, inflammation and poor posture can put abnormal pressure on nerves and muscles, causing chronic pain, impeding motion and decreasing circulation.

Myofascial Release uses techniques that work with and against the grain of the tissue fiber as well as passive and active range of motion, and facilitated stretches to lengthen the connective tissue and free the fascia. Scar tissue and adhesions are broken up and fibers are realigned.

This work can be extremely effective for helping to achieve better muscular and skeletal alignment, with postural issues, speeding healing after injury, increasing blood circulation, lengthening and restoring elasticity to muscles, and decreasing pain and tension. It can help soothe the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, muscle and joint pain, migraine headaches, back pain, fibromyalgia, injuries due to poor shoulder or hip alignment.
